Limestone is used as a flux in the blast furnace. The limestone is added to the iron ore burden of the blast furnace in the amount of ~117kg per tonne of “hot metal” (steelmaker’s slang for the liquid iron produced by the blast furnace). This produces the slag of 181kg per tonne of hot metal which contains most of the impurities: 38% SiO2, 36% CaO, 14% MgO, 9% Al2O3, plus minor amounts of other impurities (mostly sulfur).
The limestone is very important in the blast furnace ironmaking process!.
LIMESTONE is used by steelmakers as a flux agent to efficiently and effectively remove impurities such as phosphorus, silica and alumina from scrap melting in the EAF. In the Basic Oxygen Process, phosphorus and silica are removed from the liquid pig iron. High quality dolomitic quicklime also helps steelmakers maintain the refractory life of their furnaces and control energy costs in the EAF through the foamy slag process. as follows:
